Increasing reading excellence !

First grade participates in guided reading to sharpen skills in small groups.
First grade looks forward to read to self every day, where students build stamina and read independently books of their choice.
First grade builds as many words as they can out of one large word during “scrambled words.”
First grade loves to play their favorite sight word game, “Oh, no!” Read the word on your card if you can, but if you get an “Oh, no!” card your cards go in the middle!
First grade loves putting on our “thinking glasses” for close reading. We read short fiction and nonfiction passages to work on vocabulary and finding evidence from the text to support their answers.
First grade works with fourth grade each week on their reader’s theater scripts. These mini performances help us with reading fluency each week.
All grades attend Library once per week and grades Pre-K 3 through 1st enjoy Story time in the reading pit.
Grades K-6 participate in the Six Flags Great America Reading Incentive Program.
